egirl.pngSome initiatives start slow and gain traction over time, others take flight immediately and grow and grow and grow.  EngineerGirl is still illuminating pathways into engineering for middle school girls 18 years after its launch.  Only 2 years after transforming it for the 5th time using Milieu KM Exchange, its clear that one of the National Academy of Engineering's most impactful communities is only getting started.

In 2001 Diamax and the NAE developed a pioneering content marketing and engagement strategy focused on middle school girls, to increase the number of qualified female applicants to US engineering schools. A gallery of female engineers was created to showcase professionals with exciting careers and “normal” lives. An extensive library of resources, articles, and career information was created to help ensure that interested girls understood what steps they needed to take as early as middle school to qualify for engineering school admission.  A set of specialized online community features made it easy for female engineers to answer the girl’s questions about engineering careers. The EngineerGirl website achieved rapid popularity and is the top website for girls and engineering in the United States.

In 2017, the team at Diamax upgraded Engineer Girl to its Milieu KM Exchange solution and NAE staff went to work like never before.  EngineerGirl has not only inspired thousands of girls to become engineers, it inspired Diamax engineers to create Milieu so that thousands of other organizations will be able to achieve the same kind of positive impact as NAE.

I'm proud because our 2 decade long partnership with the NAE has generated a bigger impact on diversity in engineering than I could have ever dreamed of. I'm thoroughly stoked because we've moved the needle, and we are going to keep building momentum until the job is done. Over the past 2 years, Milieu KM Exchange has allowed a small team of NAE staff to take EngineerGirl to another level.  A $2 Million grant from the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation will now allow them to push even harder.
